Everything you need to know about joining the Bowie Golf Team, from tryouts to tournaments.
Tryouts & Joining
GETTING ON THE TEAM
Fall tryouts occur after school on Monday, August 25 and Wednesday, August 27 at Jimmy Clay golf course's driving range. Spring season tryouts happen the second week of January.
Yes, you need to know how to play golf and have experience with tournaments to be on the team. Tryouts are competitive and players are evaluated on their course-ready skills.
There are two teams each for boys and girls: Varsity and Junior Varsity. Rosters can hold up to 25 boys and 15 girls across both squads, though only the top 10 players compete in any given tournament.
Yes! Bowie offers a dedicated golf class during 8th period on B days. The class meets Tuesday and Thursday, and every other Friday. Making the team allows you to add it to your schedule. A great way to develop your game during the school day.
Yes, though tournaments occur during school hours (Mon–Thu), so you will likely be fatigued for afternoon practices in another sport. Additional personal practice time may also be necessary to stay competitive.
Practice & Tournaments
WHAT TO EXPECT
Practice is Monday through Thursday, except on weeks when golf is on Friday as well, depending on weather, at Grey Rock Golf Club and/or Jimmy Clay Golf Course. Individual practice at other facilities requires coach approval.
Tournaments occur Monday through Thursday during school, typically with an 8:00 AM tee time. This means players miss a portion of their school day for tournament participation.
Players are responsible for their own transportation to both practice and tournaments. This requires a signed private transportation form on file with the program before participating.
UIL-sanctioned tournaments are held at courses throughout the Austin area and region. For a complete list of tournament locations and dates, see the Schedule & Results page.
